Malagueira: An Ongoing Project

Description

The Malagueira neighbourhood, designed by Álvaro Siza Viera over 40 years ago, is included in the ensemble of works by this architect and has been included at the recent national indicative list of UNESCO World Heritage.
This summer school aims to challenge the way we see and promote critical thinking about architecture, landscape, and 20th century heritage.
The methodological approach encourages the use and experimentation of some of the tools of architecture, such as drawing, cartography and photography.

Through these tools the values and the exceptional character of Malagueira will be identified, recognized, and registered. Drawing will be used as a tool to discover, comprehend, and understand what is seen. Cartography and mapping will be used as tools for analysis and graphic / visual interpretation of the site. And the photography will allow to register the time and the action, freezing the lived moment. A creative and sustainable use of resources and tools is encouraged. The challenge is to make the meaning visible through the recognition, registration and critical mapping of the different heritage values existing in Malagueira.

The summer school is articulated with ongoing research – Malagueira: Heritage for all – and with the project’s team, seeking to stimulate new ways of seeing and investigating in architecture. It includes conferences, guests’ presentations, accompanied visits to Malagueira, the city of Évora and other places of architectural reference, walkscape to recognise the territory / landscape surrounding the neighbourhood and sharing of experiences with the resident community.

The results will be presented in a final exhibition and will contribute to the Malagueira Heritage Charter and its management tools that will be made publicly available online.
